How to Help Seniors During This Recession

The current 2009 economic crisis actually began more than a year ago and many seniors, boomers and retirees are truly hurting, many are getting desperate.  Many states reach out to their elders, however many more states do not.  For example, Texas is ranked among the lowest States in America in funding and supporting their elderly citizens.  But Texas is not alone.  There are ways in which caring Americans can help those who have blazed the trails before us.During a time when even states are running gallons of red budget ink, funds for state elderly care are reduced.  Unfortunately many of our seniors go hungry, become more isolated and hopeless.  We all can make a difference if we simply reach out with a little time and yes, even a few dollars.

Americans can contact their local city government offices to locate local agencies which care for the elderly.  We can identify local church and non-profit groups who desperately need assistance.  We can also look on the internet for local charities which may need a little volunteering.  If you know of a senior in your neighborhood, adopt them.  Visit with them to ascertain what needs they may have.  Many just need to know someone cares, some may simply need their grass cut, or need some staple food items or a little help with their heating bills.

Loneliness is a major problem our seniors face.  A visit can do wonders to provide encouragement and hope to the hopeless.  Take them a home cooked meal.  Be aware to their surroundings, perhaps they need medical attention, or help receiving cost-saving prescriptions.  There are a host of resources available for reduced senior prescription drug costs.  There are also many resources which provide meals-on-wheels programs which can be set up with little effort.

Make this a long term commitment.  Even a phone call during the week can help someone who might be lonely and may not have contact with family.

A few small steps can go a long way to meet the needs of boomers, seniors and our elderly citizens.  The true American spirit has always to help the helpless, give hope to the hopeless and reach out to those less fortunate than we.
